Sujan Jawai | Jawai Bandh | Rajasthan | India

Jawai Bandh

Property Description

SUJÁN JAWAI derives its name from the seasonal Jawai river which flows through this remarkable landscape, in the heart of Godwar, Rajasthan and empties itself into the Jawai Bandh, one of the largest reservoirs in the state. A dramatic backdrop of granite hills and kopjes, dated over 850 million years old, situated between rich agrarian fields, sand rivers, scrubland, and patches of light forest surround our pioneering, luxury tented camp which is set on its own private wilderness. The camp is located equidistant between the medieval Rajput kingdoms of Jodhpur and Udaipur, which makes this unique and otherwise remote wilderness very accessible to travelers in the know.

SUJÁN is a collection of three unique lifestyles; three sumptuous tented camps in Rajasthan. Immerse yourself in our world where we connect you, uncontrived, to the very soul of our natural and cultural heritage, whilst savoring our inimitable art de Vivre, and making a positive impact in doing so.

The SUJÁN Life is one of the transformational experiences; of parts of the planet that we know intimately and treasure. Experiences for the connoisseur, the adventurous, and those looking for the extraordinary. Experiences that enrich and rejuvenate your soul.
Proudly family-owned and managed, our purpose is to protect, conserve and restore our wilderness, our culture, and be custodians of the areas where we are situated, at the same time providing our guests with the highest levels of service, comfort, and luxury.

SUJÁN Story began in Ranthambhore many years ago – Pitched under a canopy of indigenous trees, all planted by our family over the last three decades as part of our rewilding initiative, SUJÁN Sher Bagh pays tribute to our core values of giving back to nature by remaining small and intimate, encompassing the surrounding wilderness.

What sets a stay here apart is the deep-rooted family connection to the area. The SUJÁN Family has a legacy of working with wildlife through filming, monitoring, researching, and creating awareness about tigers in Ranthambhore for generations. In 1974, the family first put roots down in Ranthambhore, and during the 1980s they re-wilded a swathe of the western edge of the park which was otherwise barren and degraded without a single tree into a healthy forest that now supports an incredible bio-diversity today.

Jaisal’s ( SUJÁN’S owner and founder) family put Ranthambhore on the map through their pioneering filming of tigers in the wild and in 1988, co-established The Ranthambhore Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), working closely with the development of villages around the park boundaries.  As a child, Jaisal had the privilege of spending his growing up years in the Ranthambhore forest, seeing his first tiger at just 12 weeks old,  long before any tourism had arrived, learning the ways of the jungle and being taught animal tracking and bushcraft skills as a toddler under the tutelage of his father Tejbir, the late Fateh Singh Rathore and his Uncle Valmik Thapar – regarded as India’s leading wildlife experts and conservationists.  Ranthambhore felt like Jaisal’s very own home in the wilderness as he learned everything he could about the forest by walking through every inch of the park; forbidden under today’s regulations. Located in a remote part of the region SUJÁN JAWAI’s style is inspired by the dark granite hills that surround the camp, fused with the vibrant, dashing colors of the indigenous Rabari herdsmen who share this unique landscape with the leopard. Created in a timeless flourish with canvas, stainless steel, and leather accouterments, each tent at SUJÁN JAWAI is abutted by a private veranda that looks upon unobstructed, spectacular views of the dramatic wilderness around.

SUJÁN JAWAI CONSISTS OF:

  • Eight Luxury Tents, one Family Tented Suite, and one Royal Tented Suite.
  • A Lounge Tent and Dining Tent which are located towards the center of the camp.
  • A swimming pool overlooking the landscape.
  • One Spa Tent as well as therapies available at your tent.

THE FAMILY TENTED SUITE  – Ideal for families or groups of four traveling together, this suite is a set of two tents that share a common plinth and verandah. Set a little away from the other tents, the Suite offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and is bounded by private forest behind.

THE ROYAL TENTED SUITE  – The finest address to stay in the region, SUJÁN JAWAI’s latest addition, the Royal Tented Suite offers unbridled luxury, fused with unrivaled privacy, with spectacular views of the dramatic Jawai landscape. Set a little away from the other tents in a secluded area of its own, the suite has a private heated swimming pool, private jeep for wilderness drives, a private butler, and oodles of space to spoil yourself in between game drives or excursions.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

SUJÁN has a tradition of growing, sourcing, and offering fresh farmed products ethically sourced from local producers. While we grow much of our own products in-house, our farmers take great pride in partnering with us to supply only the best products in the region. The cuisine combines a selection of local delicacies with some international classics and our bar boasts an enviable collection. While the central area of camp becomes the hub for meals, SUJÁN JAWAI has several spots that serve as perfect locations for private dining. The SUJÁN JAWAI campfire – lit throughout the winter – is the perfect space to unwind after a day in the bush. Particular dietary preferences are arranged for if the camp is notified of these in advance.

EXPERIENCES

Two wilderness drives a day in a shared 4×4, convey guests across this land, in search of the elusive big cats but all the while engaging with the story and narrative of this extraordinary region. The unique feature of the area and one that defines the SUJÁN JAWAI Experience is the magical intermingling of wildlife and rural human activity that has gone on in the region for centuries. While leopards are the predominant iconic species in the area, some of the other species you may chance upon including antelope, hyena, crocodile, and a number of smaller mammals. The area is also home to over 250 species of birds, from the migratory greater flamingos and sarus cranes to resident raptors and bee-eaters, it is a “Twitcher’s” paradise. Encounters with wildlife are punctuated by engagements with local communities and access to a culture strongly rooted in its own certainties. Village walks, cycling excursions, temple trails, and strolls with the Rabaris’ are highly popular activities during a stay at SUJÁN JAWAI.
