HISTORY MEETS LUXURY THE DESIGN HOTEL IN SENGLEA – MALTA

Unimaginable history seeps from the Macina’s ancient walls. Built almost half a millennium ago by the Knights of St. John the Macina has been a landmark for centuries.stances, we are making additional adjustments to our individual booking policies, giving you more space and flexibility to secure your stay at our hotels.

Constructed by the Order of Saint John in 1554, the Macina formed part of a bastion which was to protect Senglea from invaders over the centuries to come and was an important landmark in the city. At the start of the 16th century, an enormous wooden construction – the “Macina” – was added to the building. This was a sheer crane able to lift heavy loads or entire parts of sailing ships onto land. In 1864 the wooden sheers were replaced by a heavy and even more powerful iron construction. In 1927, as the “Macina” was being dismantled following its closure, it fell into the sea creating a 5 ft-high wave. From the 1970s to the mid-1990s, the Maltese Labour Party used the building as their headquarters. In 2018, the Cugo Gran Macina Grand Harbour Hotel opened its doors – and with it a landmark had been brought back to life.

The elegant design also utilizes a wealth of rich materials, such as lacquered raw steel, lava stone, limed oak, Carrara marble, slate, Maltese hard stone, and custom tinted glass.

Hammetts Macina Restaurant
Drawing on this history, the gastronomical concept is a take on the islands’ succession of powers with a modern representation of traditional Mediterranean culinary influences that date back to the Phoenician times. Like the Maltese language itself, the menu is a taste of history derived from the island’s Mediterranean-Semitic roots, with a contemporary twist, created using only the finest local, seasonal produce. The menu is constructed by a multi-award winning team, previously of the Villa Brasserie in St. Julian’s, led by talented Chef de Cuisine Jorge Lugo and directed by 24-time award winning Chef and restauranteur Chris Hammett. Dining al fresco is an unforgettable experience in the warmer months, when the imposing bastions, the fortified city of Birgu, and the spectacular harbour are illuminated by traditional Festa firework displays. Patrons can enjoy the world class wines from our expansive wine cellar. Hammett’s Macina Restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner all week, as well as for lunch on weekends. The restaurant also offers an all-day in-room service menu to hotel guests.

The Bar
The bar mirrors the food menu in its vast and international offering with an array of craft beers, a vast 110 range of local, foreign and vintage wines, flagship spirits and an extensive gourmet cocktail list using fresh fruit, homemade syrups and infusions.
