SUJÁN The Serai is a reflection of the royal caravan sites of Rajputana, blending the dash and vivacity of this ‘Land of Kings’ with the colorful history of their travels and journeys across this earth. Set on a one-hundred-acre private estate of indigenous desert scrub away from the bustle of the city, SUJÁN The Serai is ideally located for venturing into the mystical environs of Jaisalmer and discovery its fabled, 12th century “Golden Fortress”, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The immaculate white tents set upon platforms of Jaisalmer’s golden-hued stone rise up from the heart of the Thar.

SUJÁN Story began in Ranthambhore many years ago – Pitched under a canopy of indigenous trees, all planted by our family over the last three decades as part of our rewilding initiative, SUJÁN Sher Bagh pays tribute to our core values of giving back to nature by remaining small and intimate, encompassing the surrounding wilderness.

What sets a stay here apart is the deep-rooted family connection to the area. The SUJÁN Family has a legacy of working with wildlife through filming, monitoring, researching, and creating awareness about tigers in Ranthambhore for generations. In 1974, the family first put roots down in Ranthambhore, and during the 1980s they are-wilded a swathe of the western edge of the park which was otherwise barren and degraded without a single tree into a healthy forest that now supports an incredible bio-diversity today.

Jaisal’s ( SUJÁN’S owner and founder) family put Ranthambhore on the map through their pioneering filming of tigers in the wild and in 1988, co-established The Ranthambhore Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), working closely with the development of villages around the park boundaries.  As a child, Jaisal had the privilege of spending his growing up years in the Ranthambhore forest, seeing his first tiger at just 12 weeks old,  long before any tourism had arrived, learning the ways of the jungle and being taught animal tracking and bushcraft skills as a toddler under the tutelage of his father Tejbir, the late Fateh Singh Rathore and his Uncle Valmik Thapar – regarded as India’s leading wildlife experts and conservationists.  Ranthambhore felt like Jaisal’s very own home in the wilderness as he learned everything he could about the forest by walking through every inch of the park; forbidden under today’s regulations.

SUJÁN THE SERAI CONSISTS OF:

• Fourteen Luxury tents, Six Luxury Tented Suites, and a Royal Tented Suite.
• A swimming pool located on an inverted step well offering a 360-degree view of the camp.
• Our acclaimed Spa, curated by the world-renowned Raison d’Etre has four perfectly appointed tents set in a private, walled space.
• Our in-house boutique “Desert Chic”, which sources unique handcrafted works and artifacts of local artisanship.
• A Yoga Tent is located in a discreet part of the camp for those who wish to enjoy a spot of meditative exercise.

THE LUXURY TENTED SUITE  – Each with their own private plunge pool in an open-walled garden. Your blue ceramic tiled pool will be heated on request and is gently lit by candlelight at night, perfect for a special romantic interlude.

THE ROYAL TENTED SUITE  – The Royal tented suite set in a private encampment encloses has its own spa, a heated outdoor swimming pool, and tents to dine and lounge in. A private butler will ensure you have everything you need during your stay. Privacy, peace, and comfort define this spacious and luxurious section of the camp.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

SUJÁN has a tradition of growing, sourcing, and offering fresh – farmed products ethically sourced from local farmers. While we grow much of our own produce in our herb and vegetable gardens, local farmers take pride in partnering with us to supply only the best produce of the region. The cuisine combines a selection of local delicacies with some familiar classics and our bar boasts an enviable selection. You may choose to dine at the dining tent or anywhere on site, and we are always on hand to create an experience tailored to suit your particular desire or mood.

SPA  –  The SUJÁN Spa at SUJÁN The Serai was conceived by Rosamund Freeman-Attwood. An eclectic menu of therapies ensures you will experience exactly the mood or feeling your mind and body demand; from rousing reflexology to cleansing scrubs and relaxing massages and the Spa provides a diverse range of treatments and therapies.

EXPERIENCES

Excursions from SUJÁN The Serai inspire exploration and discovery in what is essentially still a largely unexplored region. Soft dunes give way to the almost wool-like shrubbery and bursts of acacia wooded patches which host foxes, the desert cat, and the elusive Indian gazelle. For Birders and Twitchers alike, the area around camp has dozens of species – some of them migratory – to tick off. Yet, it is the traditions and particularly musical heritage of this land that has found fame abroad and drawn the attention of a world craving the authentic, the real, and raw interaction with the local culture that has deep – and ancient – roots in Jaisalmer and its villages. The Manganiars, whom you can read about more in our other literature is perhaps even older than the forts around their villages and their ancestral melodies continue to resonate across these sands. Guests can travel on excursions – on a camel or if they prefer in our specially modified 4x4s – and visit villages or unravel the encounters of a day’s progress over sundowners. SUJÁN The Serai offers relaxation as few other places do.
