In 1950 the first charter flight landed on a small airstrip on Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic islands. Mallorca is now a highly developed tourist destination attracting around 10 million visitors. Palma de Mallorca (or simply Palma) located on the south side of the island is the main center and has a charming old quarter which oozes history with its twisting lanes, tree-lined boulevards, Gothic churches and baroque palaces. Palma is famous for its brilliant sunsets.

The northwest coast, dominated by the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range is a beautiful region of olive groves, pine forests and ocher villages, with a spectacularly rugged coastline. The northeast coast is largely made up of two bays, the Badia de Pollença and the larger Badia d’Alcúdia.

The east coast is an almost continuous string of sandy bays and open beaches. Offshore from the island’s westernmost point is the large, uninhabited Illa de Sa Dragonera.
The interior is largely made up of the fertile plain known as Es Pla.
Away from the cities and buzzing crowds, the island has a varied and captivating beauty. Along the jagged cliffs of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range sits a string of compact villages each with its own pebble beach and the sloping planes around Soller are known as the Vall D Or (golden valley) because they are crammed with sweet-smelling citrus orchards.
