Hills outlined by endless rows of cypress trees, majestic castles, thermal spa towns, tiny medieval villages surrounded by olive groves: the Valdorcia countryside, located south of Siena, is an idyllic valley with gorgeous emerald green rolling hills lined with cypress trees and a medieval past originating from the Via Francigena, a pilgrimage road that connected Rome to northern Italy and beyond. The area is now most well known for its wine and cheese production: this is the cradle of the famed Brunello di Montalcino wine and home to pecorino toscano cheese of Pienza. Some winding roads running through the vineyards lead from Montalcino to the neighbouring villages of Torrenieri, Sant’Angelo in Colle and the Castle of Poggio alle Mura, while gardens lovers, San Quirico d’Orcia features the beautiful Horti Leonini, Italian- style gardens designed by Diomede Leoni around 1540, with contemporary sculpture exhibitions. Near San Quirico, the Bagno Vignoni hot springs, a medieval spa center renowned for its ‘piazza d’acqua’ (literally ‘water square’), should not be missed. All the major attractions, which Tuscany is famous for, are located in this blessed area.
